EWN has successfully completed its first pilot 5 day ‘Boy’s Leadership Camp’ to develop life skills through sports in Janapriya Higher Secondary School for 60 teenage boys aged from 11 to 14. Some of the classes taught include:
- Peer Pressure
- Conflict management
- Girls and Boys
- Gender and Work
- Know Your Rights
- HIV/AIDS, STDs
- Saving Plan
- Ways to Make Money
We found the boys to be confident, energetic and eager to participate in class as well as on sports field. They were very enthusiastic to play football. After the five days training we interviewed some of the boys regarding the Camp most of them said they had enjoyed the sports very much. They liked the camp because they could learn through sports and they felt this was more practical and a different experience. Some of the boys said they had felt shy initially but after the five days they were confident to speak out. Above all they were motivated to study and play and wish to join another camp soon.
A few very interesting experience that our team experienced while working with both girls and boys. Compared to girls, boys were shyer, had less information about girls, contraception, HIV/AIDS, STDs. Interestingly, boys knew a lot about violence and child rights. They mentioned in class that boys are also vulnerable and that they also experience all kinds of violence.
On 20th June 2015 EWN organized a closing ceremony including a friendly football match for the boys and refreshments. EWN presented certificates to all the students and medals for first and second runner up.
We are very pleased to inform you that our team is now offering a Girls Leadership Camp working with over 100 young girls from Gogan Secondary School in Gogangauda in the Kaski district.
